She wrote poems, stories, and books using her initials as her name. This name, H.D., was a short version of her real name, Hilda Doolittle. She was a key figure in a movement called modernism. This movement helped artists find new ways to express themselves. People now see her as a very important person in literary history. Her work often brought old ideas into the modern world.

In the early 1900s, H.D. helped start a group called the Imagists.

This group included poets like Ezra Pound and Richard Aldington. They wanted to "make it new" by changing how poems were written. They used free verse, which means poetry without a strict rhythm. They also used very few words to create clear images. This style was called being sparse or austere. H.D. was often called the "truest Imagist" by her peers.

Her life began in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1886.

Her father, Charles, was a professor of astronomy at Lehigh University. She later studied Greek literature at Bryn Mawr College. In 1911, she moved to London to start her writing career. She lived in a house on Church Walk in Kensington. There, she lived near her friends and fellow poets. These early years helped shape her unique way of seeing the world.

Life brought many hard times to H.D. during the Great War.

She lost her brother, Gilbert, and her father during this time. She also faced the loss of a child in 1915. These heavy experiences changed the way she wrote her poems. Instead of short verses, she began writing long, complex poems. Her later work often focused on themes of peace and spirituality. She even studied with the famous doctor Sigmund Freud to understand her feelings.

Throughout her life, H.D. stayed interested in ancient stories. She loved Greek mythology and translated many Greek texts.
