Rhodesia was a country in Southern Africa.

It existed from 1965 to 1979. Before this, the land was a British colony called Southern Rhodesia.

In 1965, the white government made a big choice. They declared independence from the United Kingdom. They did this to keep control of the land. They did not want the black majority to rule. This was called a unilateral declaration of independence.

This choice led to many problems. The United Nations told other nations not to recognize Rhodesia. Two groups, ZAPU and ZANU, fought against the government. This led to the Rhodesian Bush War.

Prime Minister Ian Smith led the country for a long time. Later, Abel Muzorewa became leader during a short peace attempt.

But the war did not stop right away.

Finally, leaders signed the Lancaster House Agreement in 1979. This brought the land back under British control for a short time. In 1980, the country gained new independence. It was given the name Zimbabwe.
