In Zimbabwe, two political groups had a big rivalry. One group was called ZANU. The other was called ZAPU. ZANU had many Shona supporters. ZAPU had many Ndebele supporters. After Zimbabwe became a new nation in 1980, Robert Mugabe became the leader. He led ZANU.

In 1983, a new group of soldiers arrived. This was the Fifth Brigade. They wore red berets. They did not follow the normal army rules. Instead, they reported directly to Mugabe. This group began a campaign called Gukurahundi. This name means "the early rain which washes away the chaff."

The Fifth Brigade targeted Ndebele and Kalanga people. They arrested many people. They also killed many others. Some people were killed in public. Others died in camps. Experts have different ideas about the death toll. The International Association of Genocide Scholars says over 20,000 people died.

In 1987, the leaders signed the Unity Accord. This was a plan to join the two groups together. This helped stop the violence. Even now, many people feel sad about this time. They still want the government to say sorry for what happened.
