Stout had many different ways of working and making money. In 1916, he invented a banking system for schools. This system helped children keep track of their saved money. About 400 schools in the United States used his method. The money he earned from this allowed him to travel through Europe. Later, he decided to write only when he felt like it. He stopped writing fiction for ten years to save enough money. This gave him the freedom to choose his own stories. He even helped start a publishing house called Vanguard Press.

His life began in Noblesville, Indiana, in 1886. His parents were Quakers who moved the family to Kansas. They had nine children in total. Stout was a very bright student from a young age. He had read the entire Bible twice by the age of four. At age thirteen, he was the state spelling bee champion. He attended Topeka High School and the University of Kansas. Before he was a full-time writer, he worked many jobs. He even worked as a clerk in a cigar store.
