Many places use affirmative action to help. These are rules that help people get jobs or go to school. They aim to make things fair for groups that faced hard times in the past. Some people say these rules are not fair to others. They feel these rules pick some people over others based on race or gender.

In India, many school seats are saved for certain groups. This is called a reservation. Some people protest these rules. In China, some people feel rules for college exams are not fair to the Han people. In the old Soviet Union, leaders helped some groups use their own languages. Later, this changed under Joseph Stalin.

In the United States, many people have gone to court about this. Some students felt they were passed over for college. Some courts said schools could not use race to pick students. Other courts said schools could use race to help diversity. It is a hard topic that people still discuss today.
