In Ancient Rome, many people used a thermopolium. This was a place for quick food. It was like a fast-food shop today.

In China, restaurants grew in big cities. They helped merchants who traveled far. Some shops even had waiters who sang orders to the kitchen. In Japan, tea houses led to special multi-course meals.

The word restaurant comes from a French word. It meant to "restore" or make strong. Early French restaurants served a broth called bouillon. This soup was meant to help people feel better. Soon, fancy shops opened in Paris. They had nice tables and trained waiters. These shops made eating out a special event for many people.
