In a representative democracy, people do not vote on every law. Instead, they vote for leaders. These leaders represent the people. They make important choices for the group.

This way of ruling started a long time ago. The Roman Republic was one of the first. Later, leaders in Britain changed how they ruled. In the year 1265, a group called Parliament included many people. Over many years, more people gained the right to vote. In the United States, new laws helped women and Black people vote too.

Leaders often work in groups. These groups are called legislatures. They can have one part or two parts. Some leaders act as delegates. This means they do exactly what voters want. Other leaders act as trustees. They use their own best judgment to make decisions.

Most countries use this system today. Some have a president. Others have a king or queen. This system helps large groups of people live together. It gives people a way to have a say in their world.
