This animal is called Repenomamus. Its name means "reptile mammal." Two kinds of this animal lived back then. One kind was called Repenomamus robustus. It was about the size of an opossum. The other kind was Repenomamus giganticus. This kind was much bigger. It was one of the largest mammals of that time.

These animals were carnivores. That means they ate meat. We know this from their teeth and jaws. Scientists found amazing fossils in China. These fossils are from the Early Cretaceous period.

One fossil showed a Repenomamus with a small dinosaur in its stomach. This dinosaur was called Psittacosaurus. It is not clear if the mammal hunted live dinosaurs. It may have just eaten dead ones. Another fossil shows a mammal biting a dinosaur. The two animals were stuck together. This suggests the mammal was trying to hunt the dinosaur. These fossils help us see how early mammals lived.

Another fossil shows a Repenomamus biting an adult Psittacosaurus. The two animals were stuck together in the fossil. It looks like the mammal was using its arms and legs to hold on. This suggests the mammal might have been hunting live dinosaurs. It is also possible they were scavengers eating dead animals.

Scientists found these fossils in a place called the Yixian Formation. This area is in the Liaoning province of China.

This place is famous for having very well-preserved fossils. It even has fossils of feathered dinosaurs. Researchers first described the species Repenomamus robustus in 2001. Li, Wang, Wang, and Li wrote about it. Later, in 2005, Hu, Meng, Wang, and Li described the second species. That species was named Repenomamus giganticus. These discoveries helped us understand how big early mammals could grow.

There were two main species of Repenomamus.

The first was Repenomamus robustus. An adult was about the size of a Virginia opossum. The second was Repenomamus giganticus. This species was about 50% larger than the first one. It was one of the largest mammals from the Mesozoic era. It was even larger than some small dinosaurs like Graciliraptor. These fossils show us a much wider range of sizes for early mammals. They prove that mammals were not always tiny creatures.

Repenomamus had a body that looked different from ours.

It had a long body and shorter limbs. Its bones show it had a sprawling posture. This means its legs spread out to the sides. It also had plantigrade feet, which are flat feet like ours. These animals were not placental mammals like humans. They had epipubic bones instead. This suggests they might have laid eggs like monotremes. Or, they might have given birth to undeveloped young like modern marsupials.

This period occurred approximately 125 to 123.2 million years ago. The name Repenomamus translates to "reptile mammal" in Latin. These animals belong to a group called eutriconodonts. This group of early mammals has no living relatives today. They are members of the family Repenomamidae. Some scientists also suggest they are related to the Gobiconodontidae family. This genus is important because it changed how we view early mammals.

Scientists have discovered two distinct species within this genus. The first species is Repenomamus robustus. An adult of this species was roughly the size of a Virginia opossum. The second species is Repenomamus giganticus. This animal was significantly larger than its relative. Specifically, R. giganticus was about 50% larger than R. robustus. It had a body length of 60 centimeters. Its total length exceeded 1 meter. The skull of this species reached 11 centimeters in length. The trunk measured 25 centimeters and the tail was 45 centimeters long. Its estimated mass was 2 kilograms.

Researchers use specific physical traits to understand how these animals moved. The shoulder and leg bones of Repenomamus show a sprawling posture. This means their limbs spread out to the sides rather than being tucked under the body. They also had plantigrade feet, which are flat feet. Compared to modern therian mammals, Repenomamus had a proportionally longer body. It also possessed shorter limbs. These physical features help paleontologists reconstruct the animal's movement and lifestyle.

One of the most famous aspects of Repenomamus is its diet. Evidence shows these mammals were carnivores, meaning they ate meat.

These discoveries provided a much wider range of body sizes for early mammals. They proved that mammals were not always tiny creatures living in the shadows. Instead, some species reached significant sizes and occupied different roles in their ecosystems.

Finally, the biology of Repenomamus offers clues about how they reproduced. They were not placental mammals like humans or dogs. Instead, they possessed epipubic bones. These bones are found in many non-placental mammals. This feature suggests they might have laid eggs like modern monotremes.
