He was a versatile professional who worked as a journalist, a playwright, and a theatrical critic. A playwright is a person who writes the scripts for stage plays. As a critic, he analyzed and wrote about theatrical performances. Simoni is perhaps most famous for his collaborative work in opera. He worked alongside Giuseppe Adami to create the libretto for Giacomo Puccini's opera, Turandot. A libretto is the text used in an opera. His life was defined by a deep dedication to the theater and the written word.

Simoni's early life required him to take on great responsibility. He was born in Verona on September 5, 1875. When he was only four years old, his father passed away. This loss meant Simoni had to become the sole provider for his family. He was responsible for the care of his mother, Livia, and his sister. To support them, he worked as a private teacher giving Latin lessons. During periods of poverty, his family received food from monks in a monastery kitchen. These early challenges shaped his drive to succeed in his professional career.

His professional journey began in journalism at the age of 19. He first worked for the Veronese newspapers L'Adige and L'Arena. In these roles, he served as both an editor and a critic. In 1899, Simoni moved to Milan to further his career. He eventually secured a prestigious position at the Corriere della Sera newspaper in 1914. He succeeded an author and critic named John Pozza at that publication. Simoni remained with the company for the rest of his life. He also served as a director for a weekly magazine called La Tradotta.

Simoni was a prolific writer of comedies and dramatic works. He achieved significant success with his play La Vedova in 1902. This was followed by several other notable works throughout the first decade of the 1900s. He wrote Carlo Gozzi in 1903 and Tramondo in 1906. In 1910, he completed the play Congedo. He also authored Il matrimonio di Casanova. His extensive writings and reviews were later organized into volumes. In 1951, Lucio Ridenti collected these works under the title Trent'anni di cronaca drammatica. This collection was eventually published in 1960.

Beyond his writing, Simoni was a dedicated collector of literature. He possessed a massive collection of books and documents. In 1952, he donated 40,000 volumes of his writings and reviews to the Museum of La Scala. He made this generous gift in honor of his mother, Livia. This donation helped build a significant resource for scholars and artists. The museum library was named Biblioteca Livia Simoni to commemorate his mother. This act ensured that his life's work would continue to serve the arts.

Simoni died in Milan on July 5, 1952.

He is buried at the Monumental Cemetery in Milan. His legacy continues to be recognized through formal honors in his birthplace. In 1958, the Premio "Renato Simoni" was established in Verona. This award is presented annually on July 5th to honor his memory. The prize is specifically given to individuals who have dedicated most of their lives to drama theater. It serves as a lasting tribute to his lifelong commitment to the stage.

Through his various roles, Simoni connected the worlds of news, literature, and music. His work as a critic helped shape public understanding of theater. His work as a playwright provided new stories for actors to perform. His collaboration on Turandot linked his writing to the world of grand opera. Even his personal donation of 40,000 books connected his private passion to public education. Simoni's life demonstrates how one individual can influence many different parts of a cultural system.
