He worked as a librettist, a playwright, and a music critic. A librettist is a person who writes the text for an opera. These words provide the story and dialogue that singers perform to music. Adami was highly respected for his ability to combine storytelling with musical needs. His career spanned many different forms of writing and media.

Adami’s professional life involved several distinct roles within the arts. As a playwright, he composed dramatic scripts for the stage. As a librettist, he collaborated with composers to create operatic works. He also worked as a music critic, which meant he wrote professional reviews and commentary. This role required him to analyze music for magazines like La sera in Milan. He also wrote for the magazine La commedia from 1931 to 1934. These different jobs allowed him to engage with many parts of Italian culture.

One of his most important roles was his collaboration with the composer Giacomo Puccini. They worked together to create several major operas that are still known today. Their first major collaboration mentioned is La bohème, which was released in 1917. They followed this with Il tabarro in 1918. Their final significant project together was the opera Turandot, which was completed in 1926.

Adami’s words helped bring Puccini’s music to life on the operatic stage.

Beyond his work with Puccini, Adami wrote librettos for several other musical composers. In 1919, he wrote the libretto for Riccardo Zandonai’s opera, La via della finestra. He also provided the texts for works by Franco Vittadini. These included the opera Anima allegra in 1921 and the work Nazareth in 1925. These collaborations show that Adami was a versatile writer capable of working with many different musical styles. He maintained a professional relationship with the Casa Ricordi publishing group throughout his life.

Adami’s personal history began in the city of Verona. He pursued a formal education at the University of Padua, where he earned a degree in law. Despite his legal training, he chose to devote his life to literature and music journalism. He began publishing his dramatic works early in his career. In October 1912, he published a one-act play titled La leggenda valacca in the monthly magazine La Lettura. This magazine was part of the Corriere della Sera publication group.

As a biographer, Adami played a vital role in preserving the history of his colleagues. After Giacomo Puccini passed away, Adami published a collection of the composer's letters in 1928. This collection was titled Epistolario. He also wrote one of the first biographies of the composer in 1935. Later, in 1942, he published a second biography titled The Novel of Giacomo Puccini's Life. He also shared his own memories of the music world in his 1933 book, Giulio Ricordi e i suoi musicisti.

Adami’s literary output also included plays and books for younger readers. He wrote several stage plays, including I fioi di Goldoni and Capelli bianchi in 1915. One of his plays, Nonna Felicità, written in 1936, was even adapted into a film in 1938 by director Mario Mattoli. He also contributed to children's literature with his book titled Narran le maschere. These works demonstrate the wide range of his creative interests.

Adami lived a long and productive life in the Italian arts community. He spent much of his time in Milan, working as a publicist for the house of Ricordi. He passed away in Milan at the age of 67. He is buried in the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano. His legacy survives through the operas he helped write and the historical records he left behind about the great composers of his time.
