People used this style for many things. They built big banks and schools. They also built large homes for rich families. It was a very popular way to build.
In the 1800s, architects loved looking at the past. They started a movement called Renaissance Revival. This style used ideas from old Italian buildings.
Architects did not just copy one look. They mixed many styles together. They took ideas from Italy, France, and Flanders. Some buildings even looked like old castles with tall towers. 

People used this style for many big projects. They built grand opera houses and large banks. In Germany, it was used for many public buildings. 

Renaissance Revival architecture was a popular way of building in the 1800s.
Building in this style involved using many different decorative parts. 
This movement grew from the original Renaissance that began in Italy. A famous architect named Filippo Brunelleschi helped start that original movement. He wanted to bring order and proportion to buildings. Later, in the 1500s, the French added their own ideas to these Italian styles. They used decorations like pilasters, which are flat columns, on their chateaus. In England, the style often looked like large square houses. Some English buildings, like Hatfield House, even mixed medieval towers with Italian domes.
Many different countries used this style in unique ways. 
Renaissance Revival also traveled across the ocean to North America.
