Architects use special rules to make buildings look right. They use a set of shapes and parts. These parts are like a language for buildings. One famous book about these rules was written by Vitruvius. He lived in Rome a long time ago.

Later, people in Europe wanted to bring these styles back. This was called the Renaissance. Architects studied old ruins to learn the way. They made their own new versions of the old rules.

Another style is called Neoclassicism. This style used clear rules to look very neat. It was very popular for a long time. Some buildings even look like they are made of stone wood.

Long ago, many temples were made of wood. Later, people used stone instead. But they kept the shapes of the old wood. This is called petrification. It makes the stone look like old carpentry. Classical ideas still help architects today.

Classical architecture is a special way of designing buildings. It uses ideas from ancient Greece and Rome.

These buildings share a common vocabulary of parts. This means they use similar decorative and structural elements. Architects use these parts to make buildings look balanced. This style has been very important in the Western world. It shaped many buildings from the Renaissance until World War II.

Architects follow specific rules to build in this style. They often use a set of columns and arches. One famous way to do this is by using orders. These are different styles of columns, like the Doric or Ionic.

A Roman architect named Vitruvius wrote a famous book about these rules. His book was written around 10 AD. Architects also study the actual ruins of old Roman buildings. They use these real examples to learn how to build. This helps them follow a systematic way of using proportions.

This style has a long and interesting history. After the Roman Empire fell, these ways of building mostly stopped in Europe. However, the Byzantine Empire kept many ancient building methods alive. Later, people tried to bring these styles back during the Carolingian Renaissance.

In the 8th and 9th centuries, they used old ideas in new ways. For example, the Lorsch Abbey gatehouse uses columns and arches. This was a way to mimic the Colosseum in Rome. This was one of the first steps toward a true revival.

Many famous architects helped make this style grow. During the Italian Renaissance, Leon Battista Alberti and Sebastiano Serlio studied ancient Rome.

Another architect, Andrea Palladio, lived from 1508 to 1580. His style, called Palladian architecture, was very popular in Britain. Later, a movement called Neoclassicism became very strong.

Neoclassical buildings were popular until about 1850. They focused on clear rules and being very rational. Architects like John Soane were very influential during this time.

Some parts of this style look very unique. In the past, many Greek temples were actually made of wood.

Classical architecture is a system of building based on ancient principles. It draws heavily from the traditions of ancient Greece and ancient Rome. This style is not just about looking old. It is about following a specific architectural language. This language uses a common vocabulary of decorative and structural elements. These elements help create a sense of order and balance. Many people consider classical architecture to be a highly refined form of design. It can also refer to traditions that follow classical aesthetic philosophy.

To understand how this works, one must look at the rules of proportion. Architects often follow the principles found in a famous treatise. This book was written by the Roman architect Vitruvius around 10 AD. It provides a systematic way to use columns and other parts. A key part of this system is the use of orders. These are specific styles of columns and decorations. Sebastiano Serlio was the first to canonize five distinct orders. These include the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite orders.

These orders serve as the building blocks for the entire style. Each order has its own unique look and set of rules. For example, the Doric order is a very prominent element. In the early Greek periods, these forms became very stable. Architects use these rules to ensure every part of a building fits together. This creates a mathematical harmony that the eye can recognize. The use of these parts allows for a predictable and organized design. This systematic approach is what separates classical architecture from other styles.

History shows that these traditions have moved in and out of favor. After the western Roman Empire collapsed, these methods mostly disappeared in western Europe. However, the Byzantine Empire kept many ancient building methods alive. The first real attempt to bring these ideas back was the Carolingian Renaissance. This occurred during the late 8th and 9th centuries. An example is the gatehouse at Lorsch Abbey in Germany. It uses columns and arches to mimic the Colosseum in Rome.

The Italian Renaissance brought a massive revival of these ancient ideas. Architects like Leon Battista Alberti and Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola studied Roman ruins. They used these studies to create a new architectural theory. This period was not a perfect copy of the past. For instance, Filippo Brunelleschi built the Ospedale degli Innocenti between 1419 and 1445. His use of columns had no direct ancestor in ancient Rome. Later, the Venetian architect Andrea Palladio developed a very influential style. His work influenced the Georgian architecture of Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries.

As time passed, new movements like Neoclassicism emerged as a reaction to the Baroque style. Neoclassical architects wanted to return to clear rules and rationality. This movement was very strong until about 1850. Architects like John Soane and Claude Nicolas Ledoux were very influential. They used recent discoveries in classical archaeology to guide their work. This led to grand buildings like the Glyptothek in Munich. This building was designed by Leon von Klenze and built between 1816 and 1830.

One fascinating concept in this history is called petrification. This term describes how early Greek temples changed over time. Originally, many temple structures were made of wood. When builders began using dressed and polished stone, they kept the old shapes. This is sometimes called "petrified carpentry." The stone was carved to look like the wooden beams used before. This helped preserve the traditional appearance of the sacred buildings. It shows how deeply people valued their existing traditions.

Today, classical architecture remains a powerful influence. While Modernism changed the world in the early 20th century, classical ideas did not vanish. Some contemporary architects use a style called New Classical architecture. This term describes buildings that follow authentic classical principles. The scope of the style is broad and often overlaps with other traditions. It connects ancient history to the way we design our modern world. Even when used in different contexts, the classical language remains a fundamental part of architectural study.
