Long ago, a new time began.

The Renaissance was a special time in Europe. It began in the 1300s. The word means "rebirth."

During this time, people studied old ideas. They looked at art and books from ancient Greece and Rome. This way of thinking is called humanism. Scholars searched in old libraries for lost books.
Art changed a lot too. Artists used a way called perspective. This made paintings look more real and deep. Famous people like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo lived then. They were good at many different things.
The Renaissance was a huge cultural movement in Europe. It helped move people from the Middle Ages toward the modern world.

Many new ways of thinking began during this period. Scholars used a method called humanism. They studied the ideas of ancient Greece and Rome. This included philosophy and literature.
The movement started in Italy during the 1300s. Florence was one of the most important cities.

Many famous people made great things during this time. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci were experts in many fields.

The Renaissance changed how the world works today. It helped create modern banking and accounting.
The Renaissance was a massive cultural movement in Europe. It marked the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. This era lasted roughly from the 14th through the 17th centuries. Some historians define it more narrowly as the 15th and 16th centuries. The movement focused on the revival of classical antiquity. This meant rediscovering the art, philosophy, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.
Intellectual life changed through a concept called humanism. Humanism was based on the Roman idea of humanitas. It also drew from Greek philosophy. One famous Greek thinker, Protagoras, said man is the measure of all things. Scholars used the humanist method to study the world. They searched for realism and human emotion in their work. This approach helped change how people viewed religion and science.
Humanism moved through two distinct phases. The first was the Latin phase in the 14th century. During this time, scholars like Petrarch searched monastic libraries. They looked for lost works by authors like Cicero and Seneca. The second was the Greek phase in the early 15th century. This happened as Greek scholars moved to Italy after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. They brought precious manuscripts that had been lost to the West.
This movement began in the Republic of Florence. Florence was a major state in Italy. Other important centers included Venice, Genoa, Milan, Rome, and Naples. The Renaissance spread from Italy to the rest of Europe. It eventually reached territories in Africa and Asia through colonial powers. Some suggest the movement truly sparked in 1401. That was when Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi competed for a major contract. They were designing bronze doors for the Florence Cathedral.
Art underwent a massive technical revolution. Painters like Masaccio developed linear perspective. This technique allowed artists to render a more natural reality. It created the illusion of depth on a flat surface. Many famous polymaths emerged during this time. A polymath is a person with deep knowledge in many fields. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo are famous examples. Their many talents inspired the term "Renaissance man."
Social and economic systems also transformed. The period saw the introduction of modern banking. It also saw the birth of the field of accounting. The invention of metal movable type changed everything. This printing technology sped up the spread of new ideas. It allowed more people to access books and the Bible. This happened alongside a rise in vernacular literature. Authors began writing in common languages instead of just Latin.
Political and scientific thought became more rational. Philosophers like Niccolò Machiavelli studied politics as it really was. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola defended faith and reason in his writings. In science, thinkers relied more on observation and inductive reasoning. This helped move society toward a more modern way of thinking. The era eventually waned due to several historical shifts. These included the Reformation in 1517 and the Sack of Rome in 1527.
