These items usually consist of the physical remains of a person. They might also be personal effects, such as clothing or tools. People preserve these items for the purpose of veneration. Veneration is the act of showing deep respect or honor. Relics serve as a tangible memorial to a person. This means they are physical objects that help people remember someone. This practice is found in many religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam.

The word comes from the Latin "reliquiae," which means "remains." It is also related to a Latin verb meaning to leave behind.

In ancient Greece, relics were used in what is called a hero cult.

A city or a sanctuary might claim to possess the remains of a hero. They did not always display these remains to the public. Instead, they often displayed objects associated with the hero. These could be spears, shields, or other weaponry. Other examples included ships, chariots, or even furniture like chairs. One sanctuary at Sparta even claimed to display the egg of Leda. These objects were often used for a tutelary function. This means they were intended to protect a specific place or people.

Many Greek stories involve the movement or discovery of these relics.

The tomb of Oedipus was said to protect the city of Athens. The Spartans searched for the bones of Orestes to help them win a war. They were told they could not expect victory without them. Similarly, Athenians were instructed by an oracle to find the relics of Theseus. Some literary sources describe the bones of heroes as being gigantic. This was a way to show that the hero was "larger than life." Some historians think these reports of large bones might come from discovering prehistoric creature remains.

In Christianity, relics have a long and complex history.

Early Christians often buried their dead in cemeteries or catacombs outside city walls. Over time, martyriums were built over the sites of these burials. A martyrium is a structure built to honor a martyr. People often wanted to be buried near saints. They believed being close to them might help their souls on resurrection day. Some early Christians even believed that dust from a saint's grave had healing power. This led to the building of large funerary halls over graves. One famous example is the Old Saint Peter's Basilica.

Relics are often kept in special containers called reliquaries.

A reliquary is a shrine designed to house one or more relics. In the Middle Ages, the collection of relics became very widespread. It spread from the church to royalty, then to the nobility and merchants. This period saw many stories of miracles recorded in books of hagiography. Hagiography is the writing of the lives of saints. These tales made relics very much sought-after by many people. This high demand often led to long journeys known as pilgrimages.

Different traditions view the power of relics in various ways.

In the Catholic tradition, saints are seen as intercessors. An intercessor is someone who prays to God on behalf of others. People believe that relics do not perform miracles by themselves. Instead, they believe God performs miracles through the holiness of the saint. The Second Council of Nicaea in 787 addressed this practice. It taught that respect is not paid to the object itself. Instead, the honor is paid to the holy person the object represents. This honor is ultimately an act of respect toward God.

Relics provide a way for people to connect with the divine.

The philosopher Thomas Aquinas noted that it is natural to treasure things associated with the dead. He compared it to how people treasure the personal effects of a relative. Relics help make abstract ideas of holiness feel more concrete. They provide a physical point of contact with religious history. Today, many Catholic and Orthodox churches continue this tradition. They ensure that every altar contains a relic. This practice has remained a standard part of these religious systems for centuries.
