Relativism

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Do you think truth is the same for everyone? Some people disagree. They hold ideas called relativism. These ideas say that truth can change. It may depend on who is looking. It might also depend on their culture or language.

There are many kinds of relativism. Moral relativism looks at right and wrong. It says these ideas change between groups. Epistemic relativism is about how we know things. It says there are no absolute rules for belief. Alethic relativism is about truth itself. It says truth depends on a frame of reference.

Some people study how cultures work. They use a way called methodological relativism. This means they do not judge others by their own rules. They try to see things from an insider view. This is called an emic account. An outsider view is called an etic account.

Not everyone agrees with these views. Some say that all truth is relative. This might even argue against itself! Others believe in laws of nature. They think some things are always true for everyone. It is a big question to wonder about.
