Moral relativism

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People have many ideas about right and wrong. These ideas can change depending on where you live. This is called moral relativism.

There are three main ways to think about this. First, some people just notice that groups disagree. They see that different cultures have different rules. They do not say which rule is better. They just see that they are different.

Second, some thinkers believe that words like "good" or "bad" have no single meaning. Instead, these words depend on a person's traditions. For example, William Graham Sumner said our customs shape our views. He thought we cannot judge one culture using another's rules.

Third, some believe we should be tolerant. They think we should accept how others act. However, not all thinkers agree. Some say we should still speak up if a rule causes suffering.

Many people have studied these ideas for a long time. Ancient thinkers in Greece and India talked about them. Even today, scientists and philosophers keep asking big questions about these views.
