It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written by John Michael Hayes. The story is based on a 1942 short story called "It Had to Be Murder" by Cornell Woolrich. Many people believe this is one of the greatest films ever made. It even earned four Academy Award nominations. In 1997, the United States National Film Registry added it to its collection. This means the film is considered culturally and historically significant.

The story follows a man named L.B. "Jeff" Jefferies. He is a professional photojournalist who is stuck in his apartment. Jeff has a broken leg and must use a wheelchair. He spends his time looking out his rear window at a courtyard. This courtyard is surrounded by many different apartment buildings. Jeff watches his neighbors to pass the time. He sees a dancer called "Miss Torso" and a songwriter. He also watches a man named Lars Thorwald.

Jeff starts to suspect that Lars Thorwald did something bad. He thinks Thorwald might have murdered his wife. Jeff uses binoculars and a camera to find clues. His girlfriend, Lisa Fremont, helps him investigate the neighbors. They look for signs like a missing wife or a rolled-up mattress. Even a detective named Tom Doyle looks into the matter. The tension grows as Jeff and Lisa try to prove the truth. They face many dangers while watching the courtyard.

Making this movie was a very big job. The crew built a huge set at Paramount Studios. This set was inside Stage 18. It looked like a real courtyard in Greenwich Village. The set was so large it went from the basement to the ceiling. Designers Hal Pereira and Joseph MacMillan Johnson spent six weeks building it. They even built a drainage system for a rain scene. The set used special lights to show morning, afternoon, evening, and night.

The film is famous for how it shows the world. Most of the movie happens from inside one room. We see the courtyard through Jeff's eyes. This makes the audience feel like they are watching with him. Some experts say the film is about the act of looking. It explores why people are curious about others. The movie uses sounds like music and voices to make it feel real. It connects the feeling of being a watcher to the feeling of being a movie viewer.
