Ready-mix concrete is a special mixture made for building projects.

Instead of mixing ingredients by hand on a construction site, people use a batch plant. This plant makes the concrete exactly how a builder needs it. The mix is made of cement, water, and aggregates. Aggregates are solid materials like sand, gravel, or crushed stone.

Sometimes, workers add admixtures to the mix. These are extra ingredients that help the concrete work better. They can make the concrete stay wet longer or make it easier to pour.

There are two main ways to get this concrete to a job site. The first way uses a transit mixer truck. This truck carries the concrete while it is already in a wet, plastic state.

The second way uses a volumetric mixer. This truck carries the ingredients in a dry state. It mixes everything together right at the job site. Inside this truck, a tool called an Archimedes' screw works to mix the parts.

This screw lifts and mixes the materials as they move through the machine.

People have been using ready-mix concrete for a long time. Some stories say the first delivery happened in Baltimore in 1913. By the year 1929, there were more than 100 plants working in the United States. The industry did not grow a huge amount until the 1960s. Since then, the business has continued to grow. Today, it is a very large global industry. In 2018, the market was worth just under 500 billion dollars. By 2019, it was estimated at 650 billion dollars.

Using ready-mix concrete is very helpful for large projects. It is often used to build huge bridges and high-rise buildings. It lasts a long time in busy areas. In places with high traffic, it can last about 30 years. This is much longer than asphalt, which lasts 10 to 12 years. In the United States, 2,223 companies made this concrete in 2011. These companies employed 72,925 workers. This shows how many people are needed to make and move the material.

Think about how much work it takes to bake a huge cake for a party. It might be easier to buy a cake that is already made! Ready-mix concrete is like that cake for builders. It saves time because the hard work of mixing is done at a professional plant. It also keeps things clean because workers do not have to store piles of dust and gravel. This helps reduce the amount of cement dust in the air. Using professional plants also helps make sure the concrete is strong and safe for everyone to use.
