Because he was so smart, he became the head of the Sura Academy. This was a big school for learning. He helped rebuild the school and the place for prayer. Under his lead, the school became a main center for his people.

Rav Ashi spent much of his life on a big task. He wanted to collect and edit many ideas. These ideas are found in the Gemara. The Gemara explains the Mishnah, which is another holy text. He worked with many other scholars to finish this work. Some say he led the school for 60 years. This work helped make the Babylonian Talmud. Other scholars like Ravina II finished the work later. People still study these ideas today. Rav Ashi taught that being a great scholar requires strength. He also said that being proud is a flaw.
