Ranji used special moves to hit the ball. Before him, most players hit the ball forward. Ranji played more on his back foot. This helped him defend himself or attack the ball. He is most famous for a shot called the leg glance. He may have even invented this move. He would flick the ball behind his legs.

To practice, he once worked with a player named Daniel Hayward. They even practiced with his right leg tied to the ground. This helped him learn how to use his other leg to move the ball.

His life had many big changes. He was born in 1872 in a village called Sadodar. His name meant "the lion who conquers in battle." As a child, he often had poor health. He was once expected to be the heir to the throne in Nawanagar. However, he lost that position when another boy named Jaswantsinhji was born. Even though he was no longer the heir, he went to study in England. He attended Cambridge University to learn more.
