Ranch dressing

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ranch dressing is a creamy sauce from the United States. It has a savory taste. Most recipes use buttermilk and mayo. People also add salt, garlic, and onion. Herbs like dill and parsley give it flavor. Some people use sour cream or yogurt, too.

Steven Henson made the first recipe in the 1950s. He was a plumber. He made the sauce for his work crews. Later, he moved to a guest ranch in California. He named it Hidden Valley Ranch. He served the dressing at his steakhouse. Guests loved it and bought jars to take home.

By 1957, Henson sold dry mix in the mail. His business grew very large. In 1992, ranch became the top salad dressing in the U.S. It even beat Italian dressing. People use it for more than just salad. It is a popular dip for many foods. You can find ranch flavor on potato chips. Some people even put it on pizza or wings. In the Southwest, some people make a green chile ranch. This version uses peppers from New Mexico.
