Long ago, a king named Kertanagara was killed. Raden Wijaya had to flee to find safety. He met a man named Arya Wiraraja. They made a plan to build a new kingdom.

In 1293, a large Mongol army arrived. They wanted to punish the old king. Raden Wijaya joined forces with the Mongols to fight a rival group. After they won, he turned and attacked the Mongol army. He won and became the first king of Majapahit.

The name Majapahit came from a forest. This forest had many maja fruits. These fruits tasted very bitter.

Raden Wijaya was a strong leader. He had many wives and children. He died in 1309. People buried him in the Simping Temple. They saw him as a god. His son, Jayanegara, became the next king.
