Many of her broadcasts begin with a lengthy segment known as the "A-block." This segment can last more than 20 minutes. She often uses film clips and media from previous decades to provide context. She connects these historical events to modern news to illustrate specific patterns. Maddow has stated that she focuses on what political leaders do rather than just what they say. This approach helps her navigate fast-moving stories without being distracted by official denials.

Her career in broadcasting began in radio before she moved to television. In 1999, she started as a radio host at WRNX in Massachusetts. She later joined the Air America radio network in 2005. There, she hosted a weekday program called The Rachel Maddow Show. This radio program eventually grew to three hours in length. In 2008, she transitioned to nightly television hosting on MSNBC. Later, she won a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. In 2001, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy, or DPhil, in politics. They claimed she had described their network as "paid Russian propaganda." However, a judge dismissed the case in 2020. The court ruled that her statement was an opinion and not defamation. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed this decision in 2021. This legal victory included a requirement for the network to pay her attorneys' fees.
