Rabies vaccine

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A rabies vaccine is a medicine used to stop a dangerous disease. Rabies comes from a virus that can spread from animals to humans. People usually get it through a bite or a scratch from an infected animal. It can also happen from touching saliva from an infectious animal. This vaccine is very important because the virus is almost 100% fatal if it is not treated.

Because the virus is so dangerous, doctors always recommend using the vaccine.

There are different ways the vaccine works depending on when it is given. Some people get shots before they ever meet an infected animal. This is called pre-exposure vaccination. It is good for people at high risk, like veterinarians or travelers. They usually get three doses over one month. If someone is already bitten, they need post-exposure vaccination. They must first wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes.

Then, they get the vaccine along with rabies immunoglobulin, which is a medicine that provides quick, temporary protection.

Scientists have been working on this for a long time. In 1885, two French scientists named Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux created the first vaccine. A nine-year-old boy named Joseph Meister was the first person to receive it. He had been attacked by a rabid dog. After that, the vaccine spread to many other countries. By 1909, there were 75 rabies centers around the world.

This helped more people get the help they needed.

Today, the vaccine is used by over 29 million people every year. It is so important that the World Health Organization puts it on their List of Essential Medicines. Modern vaccines are made in different ways to be safe and effective. Some use cells from chicken embryos, while others use a special line of cells called Vero cells. These vaccines must be kept very cold to stay good. They need to stay in a fridge between 2°C and 8°C.

Even though the vaccine is very safe, some people might feel a little sick after the shot. About 35 to 45 percent of people might have redness or pain where they got the needle. Between 5 and 15 percent of people might get a fever, a headache, or feel sick to their stomach. These are just small signs that the body is working. The vaccine is safe for people of all ages. It helps the body build long-lasting immunity to keep people healthy.
