Vaccine hesitancy

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Vaccine hesitancy is when people delay or refuse vaccines even when they are available. This can mean refusing them entirely or only using certain ones. It is a complex issue that changes depending on the place and the time. The World Health Organization calls it one of the top ten global health threats. This is because it can lead to outbreaks of diseases that vaccines could prevent. When people do not get vaccinated, many people can get sick or even die.

Many different things cause people to feel hesitant about vaccines. Some people have a fear of needles or do not trust public authorities. Others may feel complacent, which means they do not see a need for the vaccine. This often happens when a disease becomes very rare due to successful vaccination programs. Because people do not see the sickness, they may not realize how dangerous it is. Some people also worry about the cost or how easy it is to get a shot.

This issue has existed for a very long time. It started even before the word "vaccine" was used nearly eighty years later. In 1998, a doctor named Andrew Wakefield published a paper in a journal called The Lancet. He suggested the MMR vaccine might be linked to autism. Later, it was discovered that he had falsified his data to reach a specific conclusion. He also had a conflict of interest because he stood to earn money from certain kits. This study led to a decline in vaccination rates in the UK to 80 percent.

Scientists have looked very closely at these concerns with many studies. In 2004, an Institute of Medicine committee found no link between the thiomersal preservative and autism. Thiomersal is an antifungal used in small amounts in some vaccines. Even though it was removed from most U.S. vaccines, autism rates continued to rise. Another concern was formaldehyde, which is used to make viruses inactive. The human body actually produces much more formaldehyde naturally than what is in a vaccine. Large groups like the CDC and the UK National Health Service all agree vaccines are safe.

Understanding vaccines helps us see how we protect our whole community. When most people are vaccinated, it makes it much harder for a disease to spread. Some people worry about "vaccine overload," or giving too many shots at once. However, studies show that the total amount of vaccine components is actually much lower now than in 1980. A 2013 study of 1,008 children found no link between the number of antigens and autism. Learning the real facts helps us understand how medicine keeps us healthy.
