Rabia Basri was a very important religious figure from Iraq. She lived many centuries ago and was a famous poet. People often call her one of the earliest Sufi mystics. Sufism is a way of focusing on a deep connection to God. Many people consider her the most famous woman in Islam. She is remembered for her high virtue and her great piety.

Rabia lived a life that many would call an ascetic life. An ascetic is someone who chooses to live very simply. They do not focus on worldly things like money or fame. Instead, they use that energy to focus on God. Rabia was known for her intense devotion and self-denial. She even chose to live a life of celibacy. This meant she stayed single to devote herself completely to her faith.

We do not know exactly how Rabia was born. Her name means "the fourth one" because she was the fourth daughter. Some stories say she was born into a poor home. Other accounts say she was sold into slavery as a child. One story says her master freed her after seeing her pray in a bright light. She eventually lived a quiet life in the desert and in Basra.

Rabia is famous for teaching a special idea called divine love. This idea is sometimes called Ishq. She believed people should love God for love alone. She did not want rewards like heaven for her prayers. She also did not want to avoid punishment like hell. She once said she performed many prayers just to please the Messenger of God.

Even today, Rabia's legacy is still very strong in many places. Her stories have inspired many people through the centuries. She has even appeared in Turkish movies from the 1970s. Some musicians use her quotes in their songs today. She is even a character in the game Civilization VII. Her life continues to be an inspiration to many people.
