He is best known as a Sufi mystic leader. Sufism is a way of focusing on the inner spiritual life. He is the namesake for the Qadiriyya, which is one of the oldest Sufi orders. Many people in the Muslim community believe he was a descendant of Muhammad. Because of his great status, he was given the title Muhi al-Din. This title means he was a reviver of the faith.

His life followed a path of deep study and quiet reflection. He first learned about Islamic law in his home region. In 1095, he moved to the city of Baghdad to continue his learning. He studied law under teachers like Abu Saeed Mubarak Makhzoomi and Ibn Aqil. He also studied hadith, which are records of the Prophet's teachings. After his studies, he spent twenty-five years in a desert retreat. He lived a life of wandering and being an ascetic. This means he lived very simply to focus on his spirit.

Gilani was born around 1077 or 1078 in a town called Na'if. This town was in the Gilan region of Persia. His name, al-Jilani, actually comes from this place of birth. Some older stories say he was born in Iraq, but most modern historians disagree. His family likely had Persian roots, and some say his father was nicknamed Jangi Dust. He eventually moved to Baghdad, where he lived for most of his life. In Baghdad, people sometimes called him ajami because he spoke Persian.

As a teacher, Gilani was very busy and popular in Baghdad. He returned to the city in 1127 to start preaching to the public. In the mornings, he taught about the Quran and hadith. In the afternoons, he gave lectures on spiritual discipline. He was known as an effective preacher for people of many backgrounds. He even attracted followers who were Jewish or Christian. He also started a school called the Madrasa al-Qadiriyya. This school became a major center for learning in the region.

Gilani left behind many writings that people still read today. Some of his books include the Book of the Secret of Secrets and the Purification of Heart. He died in the year 1166 and was buried in Baghdad. His shrine faced some trouble when it was destroyed in 1508. However, the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent built a new shrine over his grave in 1535. This shrine still stands in Baghdad today. People still observe his death anniversary every year on 11 Rabi' al-Thani.
