Robin George Collingwood was a thinker from England. He was a philosopher, a historian, and an archaeologist. He was born in 1889. His parents were both artists. He studied at Oxford University. There, he learned about Greek and Latin. He also studied ancient history and philosophy.

Collingwood had many big ideas. He said philosophy is "thought about thought." He believed history is the study of the human mind. He said all history is the history of thought. To learn history, he said we must use our imagination. This helps us understand why people in the past acted certain ways.

He also studied art. He thought art helps people show their feelings. He even thought magic could be a kind of art. For example, a war dance can help a group feel ready for battle.

As an archaeologist, he loved the Roman era. He studied Hadrian's Wall. He also drew nearly 900 old stone signs. He believed in "question and answer" archaeology. This means we should only dig if we have a question to answer. This idea is still used today.
