It is a macropod, which means it belongs to the same family as kangaroos. They have stocky bodies and strong back legs. Their fur is a grizzled brown color. Unlike many other macropods, their tails are quite short. They can even climb small trees and shrubs.

Quokkas are nocturnal. This means they sleep during the day and are active at night. They often hide in prickly plants for safety. Quokkas are herbivores. They eat many types of plants like grasses and leaves. They get most of their water from the food they eat.

Many people think quokkas are smiling.

They do not actually smile. Their face just looks that way. People love taking "quokka selfies" with them. This is very popular on Rottnest Island. However, you should never feed them human food. It can make them very sick. Quokkas are now listed as vulnerable. This means they are at risk of disappearing. They face threats from predators and changing weather.
