Formed in London in 1970, the group became famous for blending many different musical styles. Their early work drew from progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal. As they grew, they moved toward more radio-friendly sounds like pop rock and arena rock. This versatility allowed them to reach massive audiences in stadiums all over the world. Today, they are recognized as one of the best-selling music artists in history.

The band's unique sound was built through complex and careful studio work. They often used a technique of layering many different musical parts on top of each other. This created a thick, rich texture that became a signature of their recordings. For instance, guitarist Brian May used multiple layers of guitar in the track "Procession" to create a massive sound.

They also pushed the boundaries of music video production. The video for "Bohemian Rhapsody" helped make the music video format popular worldwide. This combination of technical skill and creative experimentation defined their professional approach.

The classic lineup of Queen consisted of four distinct members. Freddie Mercury served as the lead vocalist and played the piano. Brian May provided the guitar and vocals. Roger Taylor played the drums and also contributed vocals. John Deacon joined the group in February 1971 as the bassist.

Each member was a songwriter, which allowed the band to explore many different musical directions. This collaborative spirit helped them transition from small club gigs to global stardom.

The history of the band began with the group Smile. Brian May and Roger Taylor played in Smile before meeting Freddie Mercury. Mercury, who was originally named Farrokh Bulsara, was a fan of the band. He joined in 1970 and suggested the name "Queen." He also chose the name Mercury for himself.

After recruiting John Deacon, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1973. Their second album, Queen II, helped them find success on the UK charts in 1974.

Queen's commercial success is measured in massive numbers. Their album "Greatest Hits" is the best-selling album in the United Kingdom. In the United States, the album has been certified 9× Platinum by the RIAA. Total record sales for the band are estimated to be between 250 million and 300 million copies.

These figures place them among the most successful musical acts ever recorded. Their impact is also seen in their many awards, including the Brit Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Specific songs by Queen have achieved a life of their own outside of their albums. The tracks "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" have become famous anthems. These songs are frequently played at major sporting events to energize crowds.

Even after the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, the band's legacy continues. Mercury's final performance took place at Knebworth, England, in August 1986. The band later released the album "Made in Heaven" in 1995, which featured his remaining vocals.

Today, the spirit of Queen remains active through new performances. Brian May and Roger Taylor have toured as "Queen +" since 2004. They have worked with different vocalists, including Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.
