The band worked hard to create their unique sound in the studio. They often layered many parts of music on top of each other. This made their songs sound very thick and rich. For example, Brian May used many guitar layers in the song "Procession."

They also used new recording techniques to make an impact. This careful work helped them become one of the biggest stadium bands. Their songs often use many different instruments and voices.

The story of Queen began in London during the late 1960s. Brian May and Roger Taylor played in a band called Smile first.

Freddie Mercury was a fan of their music and wanted to join. He joined the group in 1970 and suggested the name "Queen." He also chose the name Mercury for himself. John Deacon joined the band in February 1971. This created the classic four-member lineup that fans remember.
