Quartzite

Quartzite is a very hard rock that stands up well to the weather.

It is a metamorphic rock, which means it was changed by heat and pressure. Most quartzite starts its life as pure quartz sandstone. When this sandstone is squeezed and heated deep underground, it undergoes a change. This change is called metamorphism. The individual grains of sand begin to grow and lock together. This creates a strong, interlocking mosaic of crystals.

The surface of the rock often feels grainy, like sandpaper, but it can also look glassy.

This change happens in a specific way. As the sandstone experiences heat and pressure, the quartz grains recrystallize. This means the grains change shape and size. They often become roughly equal in size. This creates a texture called granoblastic. As the process continues, the grains can become even coarser. This is known as metamorphic annealing. The grains become so tightly locked that the rock does not break around the grains. Instead, it fractures right through them. This creates an irregular or conchoidal fracture.

Geologists have studied these rocks for a long time. By 1941, they recognized that some rocks look like quartzite but have not been changed by high heat. These are called orthoquartzite. They are made of sand that is very tightly cemented together. True metamorphic quartzite is often called metaquartzite to show its history. Scientists use special microscopes to see the difference. They look for a mortar texture or a foam texture. These textures show how the grains meet at certain points. This helps them understand how the rock was made.

Quartzite can be found in many places around the world. In the United States, you can find it in Pennsylvania and Texas. It also forms ridges in the Appalachian Mountains. In Canada, the La Cloche Mountains are made mostly of white quartzite.

You can find it in Europe too. In Norway, there are very large quarries for this rock. The town of Quartzsite in Arizona even got its name from the mountains nearby. Some quartzite is even found in Mozambique on the Chimanimani Plateau.

People have used this rock for thousands of years. During the Paleolithic period, humans used it to make stone tools.

Today, we use it for many modern things. It is a popular choice for kitchen countertops because it is harder than granite. We also crush it to help build roads. Some high-purity quartzite is used to make silicon. This is a very important material for technology. Because the rock is so hard, it does not break down easily. This means it often forms high, bare ridges and hilltops with very little soil.
