This rock usually starts as sandstone. Sandstone is a rock made of grains. Deep in the Earth, heat and pressure change it. This process is called metamorphism. The quartz grains grow and lock together. This makes the rock very strong. Most quartzite is white or grey. It can look pink or red too. This happens because of iron in the rock.

People have used quartzite for a long time. In the past, humans made stone tools from it.

Today, we use it in new ways. We use it for kitchen counters. It is harder than granite. We also crush it for roads. Some quartzite is used to make silicon. This is used in many things we use every day. Because it is so hard, it forms ridges and hills. These hills often have very little soil or plants on them.
