Have you ever wondered what red looks like?

You might see a bright color. But how do you describe that feeling?

Some thinkers call these feelings qualia. Qualia are the ways things seem to us. This includes the taste of wine or a headache.

Many people have different ideas about qualia. Frank Jackson said physical facts cannot explain them. Daniel Dennett said they are just how things seem. Some say qualia are private. This means you cannot truly share your feeling with others.

You might see red, but a friend might see green. They would act the same, but their feeling is different. This is called the inverted spectrum idea.

Thomas Nagel asked a big question. He asked what it is like to be a bat.

We can study bats, but we cannot feel what they feel. Some people also talk about "philosophical zombies." These are beings that act like humans but have no feelings at all. These big ideas help us think about the mind.
