People who do this are called quacks. They pretend to have medical skills. They do not actually have them. In the past, quacks were called quacksalvers. This name came from people who shouted at markets. They shouted to get attention for their ointments.

Many fake cures were not helpful. Some were just plain food. One seller sold lentil flour as a special diet. It cost much more than real flour. Other medicines used alcohol or opium. These made people feel better for a moment. But they did not cure the sickness. Some medicines were even dangerous. One man sold a drink made of acid. He claimed it could kill all germs.

This could hurt the people who drank it.

In the United States, people used the term snake oil. This refers to sellers who promised magic results. They often traveled from town to town. They would leave before people found out the truth. Today, we have laws to keep us safe. These laws help stop health fraud.
