It smells like fish. This liquid can burn very easily. It is also called a basic heterocyclic compound. This means its ring shape has atoms other than carbon.

In pyridine, one nitrogen atom sits in a six-sided ring. This ring is very similar to benzene. Benzene is a famous ring made of only carbon. A scientist named Thomas Anderson found pure pyridine in 1851.

He found it in oil from heated animal bones. He named it after the Greek word for fire.

Today, we make pyridine in large amounts. Most of it is made using a way called the Chichibabin synthesis.

This method uses inexpensive parts to make the liquid. We use pyridine to make many important things. It helps make vitamins and medicines. You can even find tiny traces of it in roasted coffee. It is also in foods like fried chicken and potato chips.
