Phosphine

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Phosphine is a special gas. It is colorless and can catch fire easily. Pure phosphine has no smell. Most samples smell like rotting fish. This smell comes from other small parts in the gas.

Phosphine is a very strong poison. It can hurt the way our bodies use oxygen. It is heavier than air. This means the gas stays low to the floor. Breathing it can cause many health problems. It can even make the lungs fill with fluid.

People use phosphine to control pests. It can kill insects and rodents. On farms, people use small pellets. These pellets are made of metals like aluminum phosphide. When these pellets touch water in the air, they release phosphine gas. This gas kills the pests. After it works, the gas turns into phosphoric acid. This acid is not toxic.

Scientists find phosphine in many places. It is in the atmosphere of Earth. It is also found in the atmosphere of Jupiter. In 2020, some scientists thought they saw it on Venus. They are still studying this discovery.
