Pyeongtaek is a busy city located in the southwestern part of Gyeonggi Province in South Korea. It is a place where many different things happen at once. The city is home to a South Korean naval base and many United States troops. Because of this, the government wants to turn Pyeongtaek into a major international hub for the economy. This means more business and trade will flow through the area. It is a growing place that connects many people from different countries.

The city has a very long and changing history. A long time ago, during the Joseon Dynasty, the land was split between different counties. Some parts belonged to Jinwi County, while other parts were in Suwon-gun. In 1940, two districts joined together to form the area we know today. By 1986, Pyeongtaek was officially given the status of a city. In 1995, the city grew even larger when Songtan City and Pyeongtaek County merged into one big metropolitan city.

History has also brought some difficult times to this region. During the Korean War, a fight called the Battle of Pyongtaek took place here. This was an early battle between forces from the United States and North Korea. Later, the expansion of Camp Humphreys caused some big changes for local people. The government used land to make the base larger for the U.S. military. This meant some communities had to move away from their homes for a third time since World War II.

There are many interesting facts and numbers to know about Pyeongtaek. The city is quite large and has a population of over 500,000 people. The weather can be quite extreme depending on the month. In January, the average temperature is -4.5°C, which is quite cold. In August, the heat rises to an average of 26.4°C. The city also gets a lot of rain, with about 1,100 millimeters falling every year. Most of this rain comes during the summer months of July and August.

Today, Pyeongtaek is a place for learning and remembering the past. Many students live here to attend schools like Pyeongtaek University and Kookje University. You can also find high schools like Hankwang and Pyeongtaek High School. For those looking at history, there is a memorial for the South African Air Force. It honors 37 members who served during the Korean War. The city remains a unique mix of military life, student life, and growing business.
