Pumice is a very light volcanic rock.

It is often pale in color. It can be white, cream, or gray. Sometimes it is even green-brown or black.

Pumice forms during big volcanic eruptions. It starts as super-heated rock. This rock is under a lot of pressure. When the volcano erupts, the rock shoots out fast. This causes two things to happen at once. The rock cools down quickly. The pressure also drops fast.

This drop in pressure makes gas bubbles form. It is like the bubbles in a soda. These bubbles get stuck in the rock as it cools. We call these bubbles vesicles.

Because of all these holes, pumice is very light. It can float on water for many years.

Sometimes, huge groups of pumice float on the sea. These are called pumice rafts.

They can be very big. In 1883, the Krakatoa eruption made rafts that drifted for 20 years. These rafts can help many sea animals live. Large eruptions can even make blankets of rock 5 meters thick.
