There are several distinct types of pulley configurations used in engineering. A fixed pulley is mounted to a supporting structure and stays in one place. A movable pulley has an axle located within a movable block, and a single movable pulley provides a mechanical advantage of two. Compound pulleys combine these types to form the block and tackle. Different rigging methods result in specific names and advantages. A gun tackle provides a mechanical advantage of two. A luff tackle increases this to three. Other systems include the double tackle, gyn tackle, and the threefold purchase, which offer even higher levels of assistance.
Humanity has utilized the power of pulleys for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of their use dates back to the Twelfth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, between 1991 and 1802 BC. Pulleys were also used in Mesopotamia during the early 2nd millennium BC. Later, in Roman Egypt, Hero of Alexandria identified the pulley as one of six simple machines used to lift weights. 
Beyond lifting, pulleys are essential for power transmission through belt-and-pulley systems. In these setups, two or more pulleys share a common belt to move torque and speed across axles. 

Modern technology uses advanced versions of these pulleys to manage speed and power. Cone pulleys and step pulleys allow a system to provide multiple drive ratios.
