The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 was a major uprising. It happened in the province of Santa Fe de Nuevo México. This area was much larger than modern New Mexico. Indigenous Pueblo people fought against Spanish colonists. Many things caused this anger to grow over time. Spanish rules were often very harsh for the local people. One big problem was how the Spanish treated Pueblo religion. The Spanish wanted to replace traditional ways with Christianity.

Life was very hard for the Pueblo people under Spanish rule. The colonists forced them to provide labor and corn. They also took textiles from the people. The Spanish also limited access to water and good farmland. Religious life was even more difficult for them. Franciscan priests tried to stop traditional dances. They even seized and burned sacred masks and prayer sticks.

These actions made the Pueblo people very unhappy.

A leader named Popé helped organize the fight. He was a native from San Juan. Popé spent five years planning the revolt. He wanted to bring back the ancient Pueblo gods. He worked with many different communities across 400 miles. These groups spoke six different languages. To talk to each other, they used Spanish. Popé sent runners to different towns with a special signal. They carried knotted cords to show when to act.

The revolt began in August 1680. The plan was for each Pueblo to rise up at once. On August 10, the Puebloans began their attack. They stole horses so the Spanish could not flee. They also blocked the roads to Santa Fe. The fighting was very intense for everyone involved. The revolt killed 400 Spanish people. This included many missionaries. It also drove 2,000 other settlers out of the province.

After the fighting, the Spanish had to leave the region. They stayed away from New Mexico for twelve years. The survivors traveled south toward El Paso. This event showed the strength of the Pueblo people. It was a way for them to protect their culture. Today, we can still see the history of these people.
