A man named Popé wanted to change this. He was a leader from San Juan. He spent five years planning a revolt. He sent runners to many different towns. These runners carried knotted cords. Each day, leaders untied one knot. When the last knot was gone, it was time to fight.

In August 1680, the revolt began. The Pueblo people rose up together. They fought to protect their ways. The revolt killed 400 Spanish people. It also drove 2,000 settlers out of the area. The Spanish had to leave the land. They did not return for twelve years. This was a big moment for the Pueblo people.
