PUBG: Battlegrounds is a massive multiplayer video game.

It belongs to a genre called battle royale. This genre features a large-scale, last-man-standing deathmatch. In this format, players compete to be the final survivor. The game is developed by PUBG Studios. It is published by Krafton. The game is highly replayable because of its random elements. Players can engage in matches alone, in duos, or in squads of four. The goal is simple but intense. You must stay alive while other players attempt to eliminate you.

Every match follows a specific sequence of events. It begins with players parachuting from a plane. They land on one of eight different maps. These maps feature various sizes and types of terrain. Players start with no equipment beyond customized clothing. Once they land, they must scavenge for resources. They search buildings and ghost towns for weapons, armor, and vehicles. These items are procedurally distributed, meaning they appear in random locations each time. Some high-risk zones contain better equipment. Players can also loot the gear from those who have been eliminated.

To ensure the match ends, the game uses a shrinking playable area. This area is marked by a shimmering blue wall. Every few minutes, the safe zone contracts toward a random location. If a player stays outside this wall, they take incremental damage. Eventually, this damage will eliminate them. This mechanic forces survivors into an ever-tightening space. This process increases the likelihood of direct encounters between players. Additionally, random regions of the map are highlighted in red. These areas are bombed, posing a threat to anyone remaining inside.

There are special items and modes that change the experience. A plane occasionally flies over the map to drop loot packages. These packages contain items that are usually unobtainable during normal gameplay. They emit bright red smoke to make them highly visible. This draws players toward the package and often causes confrontations. In March 2018, the developers added "event modes." These modes change the standard rules of the game. They might establish larger team sizes or alter how weapons are distributed. On average, a full round of gameplay lasts no more than 30 minutes.

The game's origins trace back to Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene. He was inspired by the 2000 Japanese film, Battle Royale. Greene originally created battle royale modes as "mods" for other games. One notable version was for the game ARMA 2. He wanted to fix the repetitive nature of many shooters. He achieved this by using massive maps that were hard to memorize. He also used random item placement to ensure variety. Greene eventually moved to South Korea to work with Bluehole. This company later became the PUBG Corporation.

Since its release in 2017, the game has achieved massive commercial success. It has set seven Guinness World Records. By the third quarter of 2022, the game accumulated $13 billion in worldwide revenue. This total includes the very successful mobile version, PUBG Mobile. The game is the second-best-selling title on PC. It is also the best-selling game on the Xbox One console. It is ranked as the fifth best-selling video game of all time. The game is now available on many platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices.

Beyond playing, PUBG has become a significant part of the esports industry. Esports are organized professional gaming competitions. PUBG Corporation has introduced in-game tools to help spectators watch matches. They have also run several small tournaments to grow this scene.

The game follows a "games as a service" model. This means it is continuously updated and developed over many years. Since January 2022, the game has been free-to-play on all platforms. This model helps keep the community active and the gameplay fresh.
