Psy's musical journey began with a specific moment of inspiration. When he was 15 years old, he watched a video of the English rock band Queen. The video showed their 1986 concert at Wembley Stadium. This performance sparked his lifelong passion for music. In 1996, he moved to the United States to study business at Boston University. However, he lost interest in business studies once he arrived. He used his tuition money to buy musical equipment. This included a computer, an electric keyboard, and a MIDI interface, which is a tool used to connect musical instruments to computers. He later attended the Berklee College of Music to study ear training and music synthesis. He eventually left school to pursue a professional singing career in South Korea.

His early career in South Korea was marked by both success and controversy.

In 2001, he released his debut album, *Psy from the Psycho World!*. His blunt lyrics and peculiar dance moves earned him the nickname "The Bizarre Singer." Some of his music faced restrictions from the South Korean government. For example, his second album, *Sa 2*, was banned from being sold to anyone under the age of 19. Despite these challenges, he found success with his third album, *3 Psy*. The title song, "Champion," became a hit during the World Cup games in Seoul. He also had to fulfill mandatory military service. After a legal dispute regarding his employment, he served as a signalman in the 52nd Army Infantry Division until 2009.

In 2010, Psy joined the music label YG Entertainment. This move helped him prepare for a new era of his career. In 2012, he released his sixth album, *Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1*. This album contained the single "Gangnam Style." This song became a global viral phenomenon. It was the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views. From November 2012 to July 2017, it held the record for the most-viewed video on the platform. The song also reached the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He followed this success with the single "Gentleman." The music video for "Gentleman" broke the record for the most YouTube views achieved in a single 24-hour period.

Psy's influence reached far beyond the music charts.
