Yang Hyun-suk is a highly influential figure in the South Korean music industry. He is a multi-talented professional with many different roles. He works as a rapper, singer, dancer, and songwriter. Most importantly, he is a record producer and a music executive. As a producer, he helps create the sound and image of musical artists. He also serves as the chairman and executive producer of YG Entertainment. This company is the fourth-largest record label in South Korea. His work has helped shape the modern landscape of Korean pop music.

Yang's career began with a deep focus on dance. He was a member of a crew called Spark. This group is considered the first breaking dance group in Korea. He also danced with a group called "& friends." His background in dance led him to a major musical breakthrough. He met the musician Seo Taiji when Seo came to him to learn how to dance. Yang was so impressed by Seo's music that he joined him. They eventually recruited Lee Juno, a top dancer in Korea. Together, they formed the group Seo Taiji and Boys in 1991.

Seo Taiji and Boys became a massive force in the 1990s music scene. They were famous for their hit single "Nan Arayo," which means "I Know." The group was not just about entertainment; they also influenced Korean society. For example, their song "Shidaeyugam," or "Regret of the Times," faced significant criticism. This backlash from fans actually led to the abolition of the Pre-censorship law in 1996. The group disbanded that same year. This allowed the members to begin their own individual paths in the industry.

In 1996, Yang founded his own company, YG Entertainment. He also released his first solo album that year. This album featured a song composed by Seo Taiji, marking their first collaboration after the group ended. Under his leadership, YG Entertainment grew into a powerhouse. He has produced a long list of successful artists. These include groups like Big Bang, 2NE1, Winner, iKon, Treasure, and Blackpink. He has also worked with solo artists like Jinusean, 1TYM, Wheesung, Gummy, Seven, Tablo, Epik High, Lee Hi, and Psy. His company also manages newer groups like BabyMonster.

Beyond producing music, Yang has become a familiar face on television. He has served as a judge on many popular talent competition shows. These include *Superstar K* and the *K-pop Star* series, which ran through several seasons. He also appeared on shows like *Win: Who Is Next?*, *Mix & Match*, *Mix Nine*, and *YG Treasure Box*. In these roles, he uses his expertise to evaluate new talent. His influence extends into the business and media side of the industry. He has earned several honors for his work. In 2013, he won Producer of the Year at the Gaon Chart Music Awards. He also received a Presidential Commendation in 2011.

Recently, Yang has faced significant legal challenges and controversies. These issues involved the Burning Sun scandal and other allegations. On June 14, 2019, his brother, Yang Min-suk, resigned as CEO of YG Entertainment. Yang also announced plans to step down from his positions. In December 2022, a court acquitted him of a charge regarding threatening an informant. However, the Seoul High Court overturned this decision on November 8, 2023. The court found he had used his status to coerce trainees into changing police testimonies. He was sentenced to six months in prison, which was suspended for one year.

Despite these difficulties, Yang remains active in music production. In December 2023, he spoke about his deep involvement in producing the group BabyMonster. He mentioned that the youth of the members resonates with him. He noted that he has a daughter of a similar age. In May 2024, YG Entertainment released a video of Yang. In this video, he announced upcoming plans for both BabyMonster and Treasure. His career shows how one person can move from dancing to leading a massive global music empire.
