history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Province of Maryland was a special colony in North America. It existed from 1634 until 1776. During this time, it was part of the British Empire. Later, Maryland became one of the Thirteen Colonies. These colonies worked together during the American Revolution. In 1781, Maryland was the 13th group to sign the Articles of Confederation.

To start the colony, leaders used a system called a headright system. This way, settlers received land for every person they brought with them. This included other settlers or servants. The first group of settlers arrived on two ships. These ships were named the Ark and the Dove.

They landed on March 25, 1634. This date is now celebrated as Maryland Day. They settled on a peninsula in the Chesapeake Bay.

George Calvert, the 1st Baron Baltimore, first had the idea for the colony. He wanted a safe place for English Catholics to live. He visited the Americas and even founded a place called Avalon in Newfoundland. After he died in 1632, his son Cecil Calvert took over.

King Charles I granted Cecil a huge area of land. This grant was about twelve million acres. The colony was named after Queen Mary.

Life in the new land involved many different people. The Yaocomico Indians lived in the area when settlers arrived. They were peaceful and welcomed the English. They traded metal tools for cloth and hatchets. The Indians also taught the settlers how to plant corn, beans, and squash.

Later, the economy changed a lot. At first, people grew tobacco to sell to Europe.

When tobacco prices fell, the colony began to rely on the Atlantic slave trade and indentured servants. This was a very difficult and unfair time for many.

Maryland's history is full of big changes. The first capital was St. Mary's City. It stayed the capital for sixty years. In 1695, the capital moved to a place called Anne Arundel's Town. This place was later renamed Annapolis.

The province also dealt with many religious groups. There were Anglicans, Puritans, Catholics, and Quakers. Even with these differences, Maryland helped lead the way in religious toleration. Eventually, the people of Maryland chose to sign the Declaration of Independence.
