He lived a long time ago. One story says he worked as a porter. He carried heavy loads of wood. A smart man saw his neat work. This man was Democritus. He taught Protagoras about big ideas.

Protagoras is known for a very famous idea. He said, "Man is the measure of all things." This means that people see the world in different ways. For example, one person might feel cold. Another person might feel hot in the same room. Protagoras believed these views are real for each person. He thought we should respect these different views. This helps people talk and make rules together in a city.

He also taught many other things. He taught people how to speak well. He taught them how to run a home. He even studied how to use words correctly. Some people disagreed with his ideas. They thought truth should be the same for everyone. Protagoras also wrote about gods. He said he did not know if they existed. This made some people in Athens very angry.
