Gorgias was a teacher of rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of speaking well. He traveled to many cities to teach. He showed his skill in big centers like Olympia. He would answer hard questions on the spot. People paid him to learn these skills. He became very wealthy from his work. He even had a gold statue made of himself.

Gorgias had many famous students. Some people think he influenced great writers and leaders. He was known for a special way of speaking. He used words to change how people felt. He said words have great power. He compared the effect of speech to the effect of drugs on the body.

Some scholars call him a "nihilist." A nihilist is someone who thinks nothing is real. Gorgias wrote about this idea. However, many thinkers today disagree. They think he might have been joking or using satire. Satire is a way of using humor to make a point. It is hard for experts to know his true ideas. Most of his books are lost to time.
