Processor (computing)

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A processor is a vital part of a computer. It is an electrical component called a digital circuit. This part performs operations on data from a source like memory. Most people use the term to mean the central processing unit, or CPU. The CPU is the main processor in a computer system.

Other special types exist too. These include graphics processing units (GPUs) and digital signal processors (DSPs). There are even quantum processing units (QPUs) used in quantum computers.

How does a CPU work step by step? Most follow a design called the von Neumann architecture. First, the control unit (CU) fetches an instruction from the memory. Next, the CU decodes that instruction to understand it. Then, the instruction is executed by the system. The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) performs all the math and logic. Finally, the ALU stores the result back into the memory.

This cycle allows the computer to run its programs.

Computing history shows how much processors have changed. In the early 1950s, computers used large arrays of vacuum tubes. These machines were huge, expensive, and used a lot of power. The Manchester Mark 1 was an early general-purpose computer. It was special because it could store programs. Later, the invention of the transistor changed everything. Transistors made processors smaller and more power efficient. This allowed computers to move from large rooms to small desks.

Many important facts define the modern processor era. Moore's law observes that processing power can double every year. This happens as transistors shrink in size. Early transistors were millimeters across. Today, modern transistors can be less than 5nm. The Intel 4004 was the first single-chip microprocessor available to everyone. It used one chip to run digital calculators and pinball machines. The Intel 8008 was the first single-chip microprocessor used for general tasks.

Designing these parts is a very hard job. Engineers must decide on functional requirements, which are the tasks the chip must do. They also look at non-functional requirements. These include the silicon area and how much power the chip uses. Making a processor involves complex hardware and software steps. Designing the software is often the hardest part of the whole process. This ensures the hardware and software work together perfectly.
