Math can help you find this answer. We use a tool called a probability mass function. This tool works for things we can count. We call these things discrete random variables.

Think of the chance of something happening as a piece of weight. This weight is called probability mass. All the pieces of mass must add up to one.

If you add every possible chance together, you always get one. This is like having one whole cake and cutting it into pieces.

Some things have only two choices. Tossing a coin is a good example. We can use a Bernoulli distribution for this. This math models an experiment with two outcomes. Other ways exist too. A binomial distribution counts successes in many tries. A geometric distribution counts how many tries it takes to win once. The result with the most mass is called the mode. This is the outcome that is most likely to happen.
